The layout enables and encourages a range of uses and activities to take place within the rhythm of the existing floorplate, which is established by a grid of exposed concrete columns. A skylight breaks the grid to provide a large creative, social space at the heart. The workplace is responsive and easily adaptable to the professional, social and cultural needs of the Trust.
Efficient use of natural and recycled materials inspired by the industrial heritage of the building are complimented by bright accent features. This approach, combined with re-used furniture, a focus on wellbeing and sustainable delivery practices contributed to securing SKA Gold accreditation for the project.
We worked closely with the client and users, from brief development through to post-occupancy, to deliver a sustainable and adaptable home for the Useful Simple Trust, that exemplifies our collective commitment to the useful, ethical and intelligent design of the built environment.

“Every day I come into our new studio at the Clove Building and think how lucky we are to work here. As an employee benefit Trust with a design bent, we now have a home that feels properly creative. Our serious clients all say ‘wow, great place’ when they come in, and that is testament to Useful Studio’s lovely fitout… sparing, beautiful and allowing the old concrete frame of our former munitions factory to temper the light with warmth and no little grace.”
