• Shed Typology Concept for Site Accommodation

Design study for high-quality and efficient site accommodation for the construction sector.

Useful Studio were commissioned to undertake a design study aimed at developing an innovative alternative to traditional volumetric site cabins, commonly used to house welfare facilities for construction workers. Whilst volumetric buildings offer convenience in terms of availability and ease of assembly, they are inherently limited by their rigid, cellular structure, which often results in poor spatial quality, with low ceilings and restricted views out.

The key drivers for the study were to create a flexible and adaptable typology that could serve multiple functions, be easily assembled and disassembled, minimise carbon impact, and optimise internal spatial quality to enhance the health and wellbeing of staff, ultimately improving team productivity and employee retention. In collaboration with our in-house multidisciplinary team and industry partners, we developed a solution inspired by the portal shed design.

Through using a kit-of-parts approach, we reduced the number of components required for the structure, lowering both carbon emissions and overall costs. This lean, circular design requires minimal finishes and can be easily dismantled at the end of its life cycle. Off-the-shelf products are incorporated where necessary, with optional volumetric units added to flank elevations to house support functions such as WCs, kitchens, and plant rooms, ensuring flexibility in the building's internal layout.

The form of the building provides a high-quality internal environment with a sense of openness with improved daylight and views out, ability to create voids and the opportunity to incorporate natural ventilation techniques. Additionally, the low-rise barn typology is in keeping with local rural vernacular, complementing natural landscapes.

The simple, low-tech solution, commonly used by the agricultural industry, can be locally procured, fostering local employment and offering opportunities for upskilling the community.
