We were delighted to join the Berkeley Foundation, Demelza Hospice Care for Children, and our colleagues from across the Useful Simple Trust for a friendly five-a-side football match.

The Berkeley Foundation is the independent charitable foundation set up by the Berkeley Group in 2011. All their resources are used to support organisations, young people and communities to have a positive impact in the areas where the Berkeley Group works.

Taking a break from business as usual to join our colleagues at the Useful Simple Trust for a buzzing volunteering experience at BeeUrban.

The Social Enterprise aims to work with communities to improve the environment for the benefit of us all with a focus on responsible urban beekeeping, horticulture and community growing.

As part of our volunteering, we learnt all about mulching, composting, and harvesting while assisting to make new pathways, construct beehives, creating a green roof, pruning and clearing the site at Kennington Park.

Joining Grosvenor’s Supplier Mentoring Programme

We are committed to achieving the gold standard of climate pledges and taking meaningful climate action.

As part of our net zero commitment, we are proud to be part of the Grosvenor’s Supplier Mentoring Programme, working alongside over 29 SME’s across the UK as they work towards a science based target.

The Programme aims to take SMEs on a net zero journey, connecting them with experts in sustainability to learn at five workshops over eight months, with clinic sessions in between. This is covered across five areas:

  1. The business case for net zero and committing to a science based target,
  2. Calculating a baseline,
  3. Setting an action plan,
  4. Achieving a validated science based target,
  5. Offsetting

By joining the mentoring programme, we are committed to achieving the gold standard of climate pledges and taking meaningful climate action.

Visiting the Round Foundry

Members of the Studio joined fellow B Corp businesses for a site visit at the zero carbon refurbishment in Leeds.

Members of the Studio joined two fellow B Corp businesses on site at the Round Foundry in Leeds to complete an audit of reuse opportunities in the  media centre.

Walking around the listed industrial building, we were delighted to discover the beautiful chunky steelwork in the roof void, see progress with the Igloo Regeneration Ironworks scheme next door, and appreciate the ribbon of gorgeous green developing around the building, designed by PlanitIE.

Our zero carbon refurbishment has some amazing neighbours and the district is surely raising the bar with a B Corp community.

Delighted to see the RIBA Journal’s  latest article, ‘Peak waste: horror and hope’, as it came face to face with the shocking statistics of our waste crisis at The Design Museum.

The article takes a walk through the new ‘Waste Age: What can design do?’ exhibition seeks both to show how such disastrous wastefulness has happened, and to ‘explore what design can do to rethink the way we produce and consume’.

Featuring a collection of work by Sophie Thomas, the Director of Circular Economy at Useful Simple Trust, we were able to tour the space with students earlier this term – declaring this exhibition as the most transformative moment for them in their understanding of the waste challenge.

Dorking Rugby Club opening

Delighted to celebrate the opening of the new sports rehabilitation and medical centre, promoting fitness, health, and collaboration.

We are delighted to celebrate the opening of the refurbished Dorking Rugby Club.

As a small project with huge impact, this new sports rehabilitation and medical centre will make promote fitness, health, and collaboration amongst the local community.

The Club’s transformation has enabled the teams to thrive, members to increase, and a significant uptake in use by the wider community for parallel functions.

The club, whose alumni includes internationals in both the male and female game, had an ambition to deliver an innovative inclusive fitness and recovery centre, incorporating workout, physio, education, and breakout spaces.

Hats off to the Dorking Rugby Club for steering this project to completion with such passion and courage.

Creating social value through design

Catherine Ramsden, our Founding Director, discusses the power of design with Jo Dobson at Useful Projects.

Jo Dobson, Director at Useful Projects, interviewed the Founder of Useful Studio, Catherine Ramsden, on the benefits of creating Social Value through design:

As a theme that is very close to our hearts, for Useful Projects and all our sister companies at the Useful Simple Trust, Social Value (SV) through design has reached a wider audience in the built environment in recent years. Catherine, could you tell us how the approach to creating SV through design became a feature of your architectural studio?

“Since I founded Useful Studio in 2013, creating Social Value has been a very strong theme throughout all of our design work, and the way we run our business; we are a certified Social Enterprise and have recently become a B Corp (business for good).

My experience with creating positive Social Impact (SI) through design goes back to the very beginning of my career when I started working in environmental design and sustainable development and planning in California. When I later joined Fosters+Partners in London, key projects included social housing, public footbridges, and state schools; all of which have huge social implications. These experiences led to the realisation that design can really have a big impact on society, people’s wellbeing, and interactions with each other, both within the immediate scope of the built project as well as a wider ‘ripple’ effect. If design is successful, it is incredible to see how it can help places thrive through your contribution and is hugely rewarding to witness.

Good design has always had positive SI, it’s just that in the past we were not referencing it so directly or studying its qualitative and quantitative impact. There has been a shift in focus towards creating SV in the past five years or so, and this new-found awareness means that added value to our design can actually be measured and demonstrated to clients in practical ways using industry-recognised terms – what has been for years termed as ‘thoughtful design’, where the client’s and users’ needs are at the centre, not the designer’s, is explicit in our approach.”

Are there any projects that you are particularly proud of, which have clear beneficial social impacts?

“Certainly. Ilford. In Redbridge, is a town in a relatively deprived area where there is a regeneration project called Spark. The council has repurposed the spaces within the town hall, because they were underutilised, and turned a car park into a food market. The third part of the regeneration, and where we came in, is to take an old factory building and do a very light touch conversion that will provide space to nurture start-ups in the medium term (five years). The challenge was taking an existing building, doing a super light touch minimal refurbishment using circular principles, to enable people to use it on a temporary basis, and be inviting enough to attract start-ups and a communal vibe. It needed to become a playful, interesting place on a very lean budget. The project went on hold last year due to the pandemic, but during that period the people continued to fill a gap, creating a venue for PPE distribution.

The idea going forward is to create a buzzing environment of start-ups with temporary circular economy-based solutions and an environment that is fertile ground for community-enhancing initiatives.

Another project is part of the Meridian Water regeneration project in Enfield. We are involved in the design of footbridges and building on one of the three key pillars; ‘Our Place to Make and Create’. We used design as a tool to enable delivery, utilising local carpentry skills and industry. We designed a bridge that was low-tech, made of timber with bolt connections, and could be realised with a very small skill upgrade as well as with new trainees. If we could expand this concept to other infrastructure design in the area, we can guarantee 20 years of work and the gradual upskill of people in the area through apprenticeships and self-delivered workshops. This local approach is both socially and economically beneficial in local communities where regeneration is happening. And, most importantly, a long-lasting legacy rather than the ‘sweeping in and out’ approach.”

Ideally, SV would be considered right at the outset of projects rather than just during procurement and construction. How do you propose this becomes normal practice?

“We need a mind shift. Designers need to become more aware that their designs have the ability to provide increased wellbeing of the communities they touch – beyond the immediate product. Ideally, they would embed SV considerations from project conception. During the design stages, they should actively consider local conditions and local needs, as well as providing design-related employment opportunities for disadvantaged people.

Engaging the local community, local charities, and business as co-designers and fabricators will improve the sense of ownership and creates support for projects, adding value during the approvals process as well. It is important for designers to shift from being architects to catalysts for positive social change, driving long-term positive transformation in the communities they are called to intervene in.”

This all sounds very inspiring and it’s making a lot of sense! If you had to briefly give us some pointers, how can designers act as catalysts of positive SI through design?

“In a nutshell, embed it early and immerse it in the local. By incentivising community ownership, gaining local support, helping to embed a place’s localism, implementing more sustainable delivery, using local skills and supply chains, and increasing local employment – it’s that simple!

Keep it local, keep it nearby, make it about a place, and don’t build it out of materials coming from overseas. Building out of products found nearby is crucial, and if it can’t be the materials then, it should certainly be the skills. And then, if the skills aren’t there, build the factory to enable those skills!”

We are a Social Enterprise

What does it mean to be a certified Social Enterprise?

Useful Studio is a certified Social Enterprise (SE), but what does this mean in practice?

Social Enterprises are one of the most exciting and fastest growing parts of the economy. They are business, but not as you know it.

A SE is a business that trades to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, or the environment. They come in all sizes, from small community cafés to really big international organisations.

The SE movement is a growing, worldwide network of businesses that exist to change the world for the better. This might sound like charity work, but Social Enterprises are businesses. They make and do things that earn money and make profits like any business. It is how they work and what they do with their profits that is different: working to make a bigger difference, reinvesting the profits they make to do ‘more good’ in communities and across industries.

There are over 100,000 SEs in the UK, employing more than two million people and contributing £60bn to the economy each year.

How to qualify as a Social Enterprise

SE’s must be primarily dedicated to social and/or environmental objectives by:

  • Reinvesting profits into education and research,
  • Donating design skills to projects with a high social cause,
  • Design to minimise the use of resources and maximise the ability for reuse.

One criterion for being a SE is to have a clear mission set out in our governing documents. Our purpose is to blaze a trail in the integrated, intelligent and ethical provision of the human environment.

Collectively, our mission as the Useful Simple Group is to improve the human environment by delivering useful, simple outcomes that are beautiful and good. We are independent with no shareholders, and employee wellbeing is at the heart of our ethos.

What an SE does with its profits is a critical way in which we are distinct from standard businesses. The majority of our profits are reinvested into setting up projects and initiatives to improve our industry as a whole; meeting the Trust’s purpose and our social mission. For example, we played a key role in the birth and development of:

The Great Recovery: a programme that looked at the opportunities of a circular economy,

The Get It Right Initiative (GIRI): a programme to eliminate error and waste in the construction industry,

Constructionarium: a hands-on construction experience for built environment students and professionals where participants construct scaled-down versions of bridges, buildings, dams, and civil engineering projects from all around the world.

Procuring SE’s enables clients to do ‘more good’. This means that we can help organisations comply with their own social purpose, as well as comply with the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012. This Act places an obligation on public bodies to consider how the services they commission can improve the economic, social, and environmental wellbeing of their area.
